The remains of a house which belonged to Stirling's wealthiest merchant in the 17th century. He made his fortune as a ship owner and wine merchant, becoming Dean of the merchant guild and the burgh's Commissioner in the Scots Parliament. He founded the almshouse, Cowane's Hospital, which stands next to the Church of the Holy Rude further uphill from this spot.
