All the other Middlewich locks to the south east are narrow locks, a little over seven feet in width, some of them paired, but Big Lock will accommodate two narrowboats side by side, being about fifteen feet (3·8 metres) across. The lock allows a rise (or fall) of 5ft 1in (1·55 metres).
