A new part of the hospital complex for out patients and pre operative assessment. Named the ‘Ivor Lewis Building’, it was chosen following a competition for the staff to name the new building. Mr. Ivor Lewis was an eminent surgeon who pioneered the combined abdominal and thoracic approach for excision of cancer of the oesophagus. He also played a major part in developing the National Health Service, both in Rhyl and nationally. After Ivor Lewis’ death in 1982, Glan Clwyd Doctors set up a memorial fund, and there is still an annual Ivor Lewis Memorial Lecture at the Postgraduate Education Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital. I can vouch that the heating works in the reception area!
