This slab of blue slate, imported from Burlington Quarry in Cumbria, was erected to commemorate the completion of the Water of Leith Walkway in 2002. Given the abundance and variety of local stone, and the historic importance of quarrying all along the course of the river, it seems curious that the monument should be a type of stone totally alien to Central Scotland. Pity, too, about the unfortunately sited litter bin, which hardly enhances the impact of the monolith.
