A short length of missing mortar in a joint on the wall of the Church of St Mary and St Lawrence has given the snails a place to shelter during adverse conditions. Most land-based snails use a process called aestivation to protect them from hot, dry, conditions. This process involves sealing the opening of the shell with mucus, leaving a tiny air-hole allowing the snail to breathe.
