These H & V signs can be found on the side of a building on Norfolk Street Image I'm given to understand that they refer to hydrant and valve; the fire service would use the hydrant only, whereas the valve would be operated only by the water company to isolate sections of the water main. The water company ceased using these marker plates many years ago and these plates could possibly date back as far as the early 1900s when the water mains were first laid. These days fire hydrants are marked by the yellow plate with a black H on them. The V and H still come in handy when trying to find valves and hydrants buried in the snow or when council contractors tarmac over them!!
