This is the birthplace of John Ceiriog Hughes (1832-1887), who was a Welsh poet and well-known collector of Welsh folk tunes. He is sometimes referred to as the 'Robert Burns of Wales'. He took the bardic name of 'Ceiriog' from the river and valley where he lived. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ceiriog_Hughes Pen-y-bryn simply means 'head of the hill'.
