The western end of the cemetery which opened in 1847 and must have been much needed, as the town's churchyards were becoming full. It had only just been laid out when the cholera epidemic of 1847-8 must have greatly increased demand. One of five main cemeteries within Hull’s boundaries, the General Cemetery was privately run by the Hull General Cemetery Company until 1972 when it closed for burials and the council took over its maintenance. It is now partially overgrown but paths are maintained and undergrowth kept in check.
