The original name for the area was Colney Hatch, as in many of the local roads, but since the hospital was built in the 1800s (now a housing estate in the original buildings) some residents complained they were all being associated with mental patients, and the council changed the name to New Southgate, not that it was any newer than Southgate (indeed most of the buildings are older, being Victorian) but a new part of it.
