The structure carries the B4065 Bromsgrove Road over the canalised River Salwarpe. This is an ancient river crossing place. According to www.droitwichspa.com , the crossing was guarded in Roman times. In medieval days a chapel stood on the bridge and apparently packhorses would be led through the middle of the building when the river was too high to be forded. The chapel was demolished in 1763.
