The Grade II listed Central Library and Municipal Art Gallery date from 1934. They were designed in classical style by W G Davies, the Sheffield City Architect. The building is steel-framed with Portland stone cladding. The Surrey Street facade here has a central doorway with a finely carved stone door-surround topped with the city's coat-of-arms. The double panelled doors are approached up a flight of 5 stone steps. Source: British Listed Buildings
