A chapel was founded here in 1762 and built in 1766 by the Trimmer family and other subscribers; it was consecrated as a church in 1828. The church was rebuilt on the same site in 1886-7 and a tower added in 1913. It was used as a parish church until 1959 and from 1963 housed the British Musical Museum which relocated to a new building in 2007.
