I came here looking for the grave of Thomas Gladstone, grandfather of the famous 19thC prime minister, William Ewart Gladstone. A notice at the gate explains that the burial ground also contains the grave of 'Colonel Anne', Lady Mackintosh who raised a regiment for 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' in the '45 Jacobite Rising, and the grave of David Johnston who founded the Blind Asylum School in 1793. I checked every grave, but failed to find any of them. I suspect therefore that they were buried in the section of the graveyard which lay directly behind St. Ninian's Church and which has long since been built over. The ground is now covered by a large modern block of flats awaiting occupation. So, a bit of a cheat really. Until very recently, commercially-driven Leithers, as residents of a working port, always placed a higher priority on securing the future than on conserving the past.
