A notice at the gate explains that burials took place here from 1664 to 1820. The parishioners of North Leith had been deprived of their burial ground with the building of the Citadel in 1656 and were eventually granted land here after the Restoration. Most of the original ground behind St. Ninian's has been overbuilt, however, leaving only a small enclosure and about thirty gravestones, many with a maritime connection. Image
