A well-conserved part of Leith which I assume escaped the wholesale demolition of the 1960s and 70s because the buildings in this area had been gradually colonised by the former Leith Hospital. It was here in the 1840s that the successful Leith-born merchant and philanthropist, Sir John Gladstone, left his mark on the town with the founding of a boys' school, a girls' school, an institution for 'female incurables' and a rose garden.
