The Quilts from West Bowling Green Street Bridge

The Quilts is the name of a modern housing development on a bend of the Water of Leith. In the 16th century, the river banks here lay outside the town's fortifications and were a resort where Leithers, joined by the French occupying troops, played bowls and skittles. The French word 'quille' meaning a skittle was apparently corrupted by the locals into 'quilt', hence the area's present name.
