The mill race still runs under this former water mill, leaving the canal under the bridge just above the top lock gates. This would be an unusual arrangement on many canals, where water is much too scarce to divert, but the lower part of the Grand Union is so intertwined with the River Colne that a number of the canal pounds have a good flow of river water in them. I had a brief flurry of Googling to try and see who Black Jack was but gave up after 3 pages. But the Mill is now a B&B, used to be an Italian restaurant, and also featured in an episode of Dr Who.
