After the building of the GN&LNWJt Nottingham-Melton-Market Harborough line through the Vale of Belvoir in 1878, the Great Northern built a circuitous branch from Scalford on the Joint Line to Eaton to exploit the rich iron ore reserves in the area. The Eaton Branch survived in British Railways ownership until the closure of the last quarries in 1963.
