On 1st July 1933, when the Scottish Youth Hostels Association was just 2 years old, it opened a youth hostel at this hill farm near Garelochhead, Dunbartonshire. The area was already served with simple hostels at Inverbeg and Glen Loin (Arrochar), mainly to accommodate cyclists and walkers from the urban centres of central Scotland, so Rahane hostel would add to the possibilities for tours and walks. There were 24 beds in six dormitories. Facilities were good, with water laid on, shower-bath and bath, and camping. Farm produce and dry groceries were obtainable. There were 729 bednights in 1934, but the premises had to be given up unexpectedly on 25th May 1934. There are two farmhouse here. Mamore Farm (seen here) is nearer the road; further away is Mambeg Farm. The complex is still a working farm. Please contact if you have any stories to tell of old youth hostels or hostelling experiences for the SYHA Archive.
