The sign depicts Queen Victoria (1819-1901). Queen from 1837-1901 and Empress of India 1876-1901. Her reign, the longest of any British sovereign, coincided with the heyday of British oversea power, and Victoria became a symbol of the nation's solidarity and confidence.
