This appears to be an old railway halt on the Edinburgh South Suburban Railway line. A ramp runs down from Mayfield Road to what looks like a wooden platform for offloading freight. There are a number of commercial premises on the roadway above, such as a builder's yard, suggesting that they were supplied with materials offloaded here.
