What can I say? Situated on the A449 about seven miles south of Stourport. Fellow Geographer Fasgadh suggests that the lettering represents, in a back-to-front way, Worcestershire County Council. Now confirmed by another Geographer, James Yardley: "by convention Worcestershire marked their property with the initials CCW (for County Council of Worcester) to distinguish them from the neighbouring county of Warwickshire (which used the more intuitive WCC)." Another fellow Geographer, David H, tells me that "the Worcestershire mileposts are a rare example of county-issued directions, and as a result have all been kept, around 12 from memory although one was stolen recently."
