Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865) was the first head of the Meteorological Office, and commanded the cartographic expedition of HMS Beagle on which Charles Darwin sailed around the world. Fitzroy lived in Upper Norwood briefly at the end of his life and committed suicide here in 1865. Depression and suicide ran in his family: one uncle was Viscount Castlereagh, the former Prime Minister who likewise died by his own hand.
