The original Streatham Spa was founded when springs of medicinal value were discovered on Streatham Common in 1660. By the end of the 17th century, Streatham's fame as a spa resort was at its height. The Streatham Spa wells had stood in the grounds of the large estate known as The Rookery. The Rookery was opened to the public in 1913, after the 18th century house had been demolished. It is now the best-kept formal garden in the Borough of Lambeth. This is the site of one of the three original wells.
