St John the Baptist's Church is on Market Street, in Atherton town centre. There have been at least 3 chapels or churches on this site. A chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist at Chowbent was built in 1645 as the second chapel of ease to Leigh Parish Church. This first chapel was replaced by a new St John's Chapel on the same site which was consecrated in 1814. This second chapel was, in turn, replaced by the present church, consecrated in 1879. It is a Grade II Listed building (http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=213476 - Images of England).
