The street is named after Image, which is visible on the right. The grassy slope to the right of the road, on the far side of the bounding wall, is part of the Glasgow Necropolis. At the time of the first-edition OS map (c.1860), the Sub-Dean Mill (shown as "Subdean Mills" on the map), would have been just a short distance ahead. It was a grain mill, and was one of several mills that once stood alongside the Molendinar Burn. Since then, the burn has been culverted for almost all of its length (see Image); according to the "Glasgow Encyclopedia" (1994), this was carried out in 1877. This seems a pity, given its importance in the traditional origins of Glasgow (it is thought to be the "Melingdenor" mentioned in Jocelyn's "Life of Kentigern").
