The stone in the foreground, on the right, commemorates several members of the Leiper family; among them is the architect William Leiper (see, for example, Image, Image). The stone was designed by Leiper himself, for his father. There used to be an angel (by Charles Benham Grassby) on top of the memorial, but it disappeared some decades ago. In the present photograph, the inscription on the sunlit side refers to the architect's father (also named William), who was a teacher: "A tribute to the memory of William Leiper by his pupils. Died 17 August 1867, aged sixty-six years / The redeemed of the Lord shall return." On the adjacent visible side: "Jane Leiper, younger daughter of the said William Leiper, died nineteenth December 1873, also Jane Mellis his wife who died nineteenth June 1879, aged seventy-six years, also Isobel Leiper his elder daughter who died nineteenth August 1899". [The surname of the wife of William Leiper senior is sometimes spelled Mellis (as here), and sometimes Myles.] Proceeding anticlockwise, the next side (unseen in this view, but shown in Image) commemorates the architect himself: "Also William Leiper, architect RSA FRIBA, his son, who died twenty-seventh May nineteen hundred & sixteen aged seventy-seven years".
