I'm always wary of cows with small calves as I have had to throw my dignity to the winds and scarper out of range on a few memorable occasions. However I have learned that they have a mental 'exclusion zone' and if you move past obliquely, observe a detour if necessary and act calmly then you should have no problems. Having a loose dog or dogs with you or stumbling into a herd unexpectedly can prove decidedly dicey. Executing a standing sprint in walking boots and daysack while encumbered with walking poles and or dogs can leave you and your walking partners elbowing and competing for a stile or fence while weakened by adrenalin, laughter and a mental picture of the disaster movie of a radio report of yet more silly walkers being trampled by cattle.
