Although surrounded by suburbia with Petts Wood to the south, and Chislehurst to the north and west, the National Trust owned Hawkwood Estate is like real countryside, with hedges, streams and woods. Walking down Botany Bay Lane from Chislehurst Common, one comes to the picturesque Tongs Farm seen here. Tongs Farm, was acquired in 1975 on the proviso that farming should continue to preserve its rural character. The house was rebuilt in the 1960s having been badly damaged by fire, but sadly the barn-like structure on the far side was seen in April 2012 to have been gutted by fire, although the house appeared to have escaped this time - see also http://www.geograph.ie/photo/2399875
