Directory records for 1880 show George Massey as a ginger beer manufacturer at an address in an adjacent street. This building is dated 1883 and is clearly related to the trade Image], so it is reasonable to assume that the business was prosperous enough to justify the building of a new works, complete with attached dwelling house. The shop may well have existed as the retail outlet from the time of building, but the shop front itself is clearly modern. The continued use of the building can also be made out from the faded sign on the side wall at the right of the building. Image] The whole building is a remarkably untouched example of a small courtyard factory with retail front and dwelling house.
