Ledsham: view from Ledsham Lane; some of the extensive greenhouses and, in the background, the former British Nuclear Fuels nuclear plant. The WW-II arms factory here was bought by the Atomic Energy Authority after the war and expanded to become a major nuclear research and production facility, at one time producing highly enriched uranium and tritium for use in nuclear weapons ("A- and H-bombs"). The gas diffusion plant closed in 1982 and is currently being decommissioned but the (now Urenco) gas centrifuge plant remains in operation making enriched uranium for civil purposes (nuclear power).
