Originally built on the site of a chalk pit around the 1820s it zigzagged its way west from Dyke Road to Regent Hill past a former brewery which closed in the 1920s and survived as a through route until the 1960s when the main Marks & Spencer store on Western Road extended northwards and blocked the street up. The shop on the left has for many years been linked with a shop in Image, originally the upper floor of a toy shop called Gamleys, then a branch of Blacks and now an electrical retailer. The store below is currently occupied by Panasonic. See also Image
