The notice on the gates says, "We welcome you and your pets to our Churchyard. Please keep dogs on a lead and prevent them from fouling the ground. Please close the gate. Thank you". The gates were presented in memory of John Chester Smith, who sadly died in France on the 4th December 1971. He was only 23. See:- Image
