Melrose Town Centre one-way traffic system

A trial one-way traffic system was put in place in Melrose in March 2006. The system runs clockwise along Buccleuch Street, turning up Abbey Street into Market Square and back down the High Street. This photo shows traffic turning left into Buccleuch Street (no access to the High Street from the East-southeast) while cars move West-northwest down High Street. A recent poll indicates that the majority of townsfolk are in favour of the scheme. It has certainly proved to be beneficial to the High Street which became congested with traffic at peak times in the old system.
