The tablet in the centre of this frontage says that Perth Grammar School once occupied the site; it was demolished by Cromwell in 1652, rebuilt in 1773 and transferred to Perth Academy in 1807. The building was converted to a theatre in 1810 but was only used as such for nine years before being burnt down in 1823.
