Sunk in 1853 and with further shafts sunk in the 1860's by 1896 there were 1,128 men employed here and two mines were established nearby also. The mine stood here until after 1957, when mining ceased but the mine was maintained for ventilation purposes in linked mines in the Rhondda at Maerdy. The site has been landscaped and reclaimed as a country park. It is a beautiful spot and the pit wheel sits peacefully in one of South Wales' most beautiful cwms.
