The light is set surrounded by a clachan of cottages built to house the former Irish Lights employees. The Dublin writer Brendan Behan at one time was responsible for painting the lighthouse and the surrounding cottages as an employee of Irish Lights. His efforts were not appreciated by the head light keeper who successfully wrote to Head Office demanding Behan's sacking. http://www.thedownrecorder.co.uk/pages/index.asp?title=A_summer_in_Co._Down_with_Behan In March 2014, the lighthouse was the scene of a dramatic rescue by NIFRS and NIAS personnel of a painter who had got into difficulties when scaffolding collapsed. http://www.u.tv/News/Man-left-dangling-from-lighthouse/9d54e574-609b-425f-a56a-296ea605f8a1
