View NW, towards Machynlleth etc.; ex-Cambrian Whitchurch - Oswestry - Welshpool - Machynlleth - Aberystwith/Barmouth - Pwllheli main line. The 12.00 Aberystwyth - Shrewsbury stopping train is entering the loop at Talerddig and will turn off beyond Welshpool at Buttington onto the ex-GW&LNW Joint line to Shrewsbury. The locomotive is 'Dukedog' 4-4-0 No. 9004 built in 8/36 as No. 3204 from 'Duke' No. 3271 and 'Bulldog No. 3439, named 'Earl of Dartmouth' for a few months only, renumbered 9004 in 7/46 and withdrawn 6/60. I was travelling in an ex-GW Diesel railcar on a Special hired to convey members of the (pioneer) Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society from Paddington to Towyn for their 1953 Annual General Meeting, which was a splendid way to see the Cambrian Coast route from London - except that the railcar broke down in the middle of the night on the return journey.
