Also known as 1st Baron Lister, Sir Joseph is credited as being the 'Father of modern surgery' for his contributions to surgical techniques, particularly the sterilisation of surgical instruments and anti-infection procedures. He was born in Essex in 1827, worked in Glasgow for much of his career, and died in 1912. The antiseptic mouthwash 'Listerine' is thought to be named in his honour. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Lister,_1st_Baron_Lister
