The monument is at Holmsley South Airfield, which started out as an RAF facility but was also used by the USAF. Aircraft based here included Spitfire, Mustang, Liberator, Typhoon, Halifax, Marauder, Mosquito, York, and Horsa gliders. The airfield closed in 1946.
