The Victorians turned the ruins of Pontefract Castle into gardens. In the central part of the castle grounds, where the path to the left leads, is a large expanse of lawn, which is the scene of many events during the summer months, fetes, historical re- enactments etc. The path to the left leads to the Castle Forge, a privately owned blacksmith shop.
