Gordon Street in Belfast is still paved by setts. About half way down the street two of the setts have been replaced with two in cast iron bearing the words "King William enters Belfast here in 1690 through its first defended gateway". Note - the words ARE back to front, this is not an error on my behalf. Very curious - I can't find out any information as to when these were placed here nor by whom. Many sources claim that William entered the town at the North Gate which was near the top of North Street and the now cleared John Street. However there is also evidence that William in fact entered through Strand Gate which was on the eastern side of the town - this location would fit that theory. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~econnolly/books/additionalsidelights/as_william_iii.html for evidence and discussions on the theory.
