Looking downstream from the bridge. There are many River Avons in the United Kingdom, not surprisingly as 'Avon' derives from an old word meaning 'River'. This is the Avon that passes through Chippenham, Bath and Bristol and reaches the Bristol Channel at Avonmouth. This part of the Avon is known as the 'Sherston Branch': the 'Tetbury Branch' joins it in Malmesbury Image It is unusual to find two branches of the same river; normally one or other branch will have a different name.
