Union Street in Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. In the background, one of the Isle of Wight's trains runs along the pier. These electric trains, built in 1938 for London's Underground, still operate in daily service between Shanklin and Ryde. At the head of Ryde pier they connect with ferries across the Solent to Portsmouth. In the far distance, on the other side of the Solent, is the mainland.
