Part of Helshore Textile Museums along with the more modern Whitaker's mill. Higher Mill dates from 1789 and resembles contemporary domestic architecture. It was used for woollen cloth finishing until 1967. It has water powered fulling stocks (later electric powered), milling machines and teazel gigs. The enthusiastic guides delight in explaining the use of stale urine for fulling and sulphur (no new spelling for me) for bleaching - the smell must have been something else!
