Kilkeel's main Catholic church is located on the very outskirts of the modern town. In the past it would have been some distance outside. Massforth had been place where the Mass was celebrated in the open air during the Penal Times when Catholic churches were banned in Ireland. The first chapel was built in 1811 and was replaced by the present church in 1870, at the then enormous cost of £5000.
