Resting outside Woodford Halse Locomotive Depot is Thompson class O1 2-8-0 No. 63571 (rebuilt 8/49 of a Great Central O4 2-8-0), one of the numerous 2-8-0's employed on the heavy freight traffic on the ex-GC 'London Extension' main line from Sheffield, Nottingham and Leicester to Banbury and London - before it was abruptly abandoned in 9/66. The Depot served the traffic in and out of the large Woodford Marshalling Yards. In 10/54 (18 months after this photograph was taken) the Depot (coded 38E) had an allocation of 47, comprising:- 3 4-6-0, 23 2-8-0 (all ex-WD), 6 2-6-2, 8 0-6-0, 2 2-6-4T and 5 0-6-0 Diesel shunters. (No. 63571 was from Annesley Depot).
