Close to Pierowall Bay and was built by Scotsman, Gilbert Balfour from Fife. The land was granted in 1560 and building is believed to have started soon after. Footnote: Whilst on holiday on the Orkney Islands, Pearl decided to have her picture taken "planking" in various places. This is a Facebook led craze which involves having your picture taken whilst lying face down, arms at your side. I've included it because it is relevant to its time and Pearl isn't that obvious in the picture.
