Former Crossroads, Old Thornwell (2)

A view from the south of Image The east-west route is the former Roman road that was once ran from Chichester to Pevensey and remained a major through route until 1819 when a new turnpike to the south, the current A27, was opened. In compensation for building the road across the Folkington estate, the old route from here to Swines Hill, now Polegate, was closed. A house, Thorney Hill, has been built as an entrance though the old route can still be traced as a hedgerow all the way to the A22. The north-south road is also an old route being a former drove linking Wilmington to its wood pastures at the northern tip of the parish as well as a through route to the market town of Hailsham. Robin Post Lane, the northern part, is now a dead end for motor vehicles though other traffic can still travel through the woods to get to the house called Robin Post at the junction of Arlington Road West. The partially obscured house is Old Thornwell.
