UMIST (The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) grew out of "The Mechanics' Institute in Manchester" which was established in 1824. During 1955 and 1956 (by then known as) the Manchester College of Science and Technology achieved independent university status. The name was changed to UMIST in 1966. Although a university in its own right, UMIST maintained close links with the (Victoria) University of Manchester, with which it merged in 2004.
